10 Termite Prevention Tips
Termite prevention is something every homeowner should consider. We hope these 10 termite prevention tips can help you ward off these unwanted, sometimes destructive, pests.
Termites can be bad news for homes all over the United States. Florida isn't an exception. Termites have the ability to chew through wood, flooring, and even wallpaper undetected. This sometimes unnoticed damage can compromise the structural stability of a home within several years depending on the species. It is reported that termites cause approximately $5 billion worth of property damage each year.
Luckily, we found some great termite prevention tips that we feel all could benefit from. These tips were taken from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and can help protect your greatest investment, your home, from termites:
Wood-boring insect damage is not covered by homeowners' insurance policies so consider scheduling a professional inspection annually.
Termites need moisture to thrive so try to eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home.
Repair leaking water pipes, faucets, and exterior AC units.
Repair and replace fascia, soffits and rotted roof shingles.
Replace old weather stripping and loose mortar around doors & windows.
Ensure you have properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks to divert water away from the home.
Inspect the foundation of a home regularly for signs of mud tubes (used by termites to reach a food source), uneven or loose paint and wood that sounds hollow when tapped.
Regularly inspect all exterior areas of wood, including, doorframes, windows, and skirting boards for any changes.
Try to maintain an 18-inch gap between soil and any wood portions of your home.
Firewood should be stored at least 20 feet away from the house.
Termite prevention helps, but termites cannot be controlled with only do-it-yourself measures.
